Summer programs

Many programs are held at the state and regional level by state scholastic press associations. Be sure to check with your local association in addition to perusing this list.

The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund maintains an extensive list of non-DJNF student journalism programs and DJNF student programs.


National

  • The Digital Media Academy program at several locations offers hands-on learning for students in the areas of digital photography and Photoshop, Web design, animation and video.

California

  • The Bay Area Multicultural Media Academy is held at San Francisco State University. It's an intensive two-week summer journalism workshop for underprivileged Bay Area youth.
  • Larry Welborn runs the California Scholastic Press Association Journalism Workshop at California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo.
  • Grammy Camp is held at the University of Southern California. It focuses on learning about a career in music journalism.
  • Harvard-Westlake High School in North Hollywood hosts a two-week program, Journalism for Geniuses.
  • Newspaper by the Bay is a program run at Stanford University by Gil Chesterton. Contact him for more information.
  • Newspapers2 teach both middle and high school students newspaper basics. It will take place at Cal State Long Beach.

Colorado

District of Columbia

  • American University's School of Communication's Discover the World of Communication is open to all high school students. It includes courses on communication, scriptwriting, journalism, broadcasting, film, video and photography. Classes are taught by SOC faculty as well as other professional journalists, filmmakers and Web writers and designers.
  • The Corcoran College of Art + Design offers a summer two-week residential program for aspiring photojournalists. FOCUS on Photojournalism is taught in conjunction with the White House News Photographers' Association and offers students the opportunity to enhance their photography skills while exploring the world of photojournalism in the nation's capital.
  • Georgetown University's summer high school Journalism Workshop gives students the opportunity to advance their skills in print, photo, and broadcast journalism, as well as in blogs and other digital media.
  • George Washington University's Photojournalism mini-course focuses on developing basic skills and furthering photographic technique; the photograph as a story-telling document that probes social issues and events.

Florida

  • The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla., is holding its High School Journalism Program for students in the Tampa Bay area.
  • The University of Florida's Summer Journalism Institute is a weeklong progam for students and advisers. It offers student workshops for: newspaper editors, yearbook editors, photographers, broadcasters and Web designers. Rising sophomores, juniors and seniors may attend; graduating seniors may not. Students participate in daylong classes and live in a campus dorm under the supervision of the SJI staff.
  • The University of Miami hosts a broadcast journalism program for students to teach them about the business. It's called Boot Camp for Your Brain.
  • Walsworth Publishing Workshop of Camp Orlando is holding a workshop for yearbook and newspaper students. . Contact them to recieve a brochure and/or more information.

Georgia

  • The Georgia Journalism Academy is a weeklong program for students and teachers at the University of Georgia presented by the Georgia Scholastic Press Association. Student courses have included advertising, design, leadership, opinion writing, photojournalism and more.

Illinois

  • The Kettle Moraine Press Association Summer Journalism Workshop at Northern Illinois University gives publication staffs an advantage as they approach the challenge of covering their schools’ activities.
  • Northwestern University holds its competitive National High School Institute for a month during the summer to teach journalism to about 85 students.

Indiana

  • Ball State University in Muncie hosts the Summer Journalism Workshops for students and advisers interested in writing, editing and design, plus special sessions for people interested in specific computer programs, magazines and the business side of things.
  • The Indiana University High School Journalism Institute is for students and teachers. It includes a series of intensive journalistic workshops for high school media staff members with concentrations on yearbook, broadcast news, newspaper and photography.

Iowa

  • The University of Iowa holds a Summer Youth Program in journalism. It includes sessions on photography, desktop publishing, Web site design and newspaper and yearbook design.

Kansas

  • The University of Kansas' Kansas Journalism Insitute teaches scholastic journalists to better meet the needs of their school publications. Ten academic sections are offered, including design, writing, digital photography, leadership, electronic journalism and beginning and advanced newspaper.

Maryland

  • The University of Maryland and the Maryland Scholastic Press Association sponsor summer programs at the university for students. See this site for details on the next program.

Michigan

  • Michigan Interscholastic Press Association and Michigan State University sponsor the Camp MIPA summer journalism program.

Minnesota

  • The National Scholastic Press Association offers a summer workshop for students and advisers at the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.
  • The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, offers a two-week residential a youth journalism program, ThreeSixty.

Mississippi

Missouri

  • The University of Missouri in Columbia offers a Summer Media Workshop for yearbook and newspaper students. It has units for beginners and advanced students with special sections on photography and desktop publishing.

Nebraska

  • The Nebraska High School Press Association's Summer Journalism Workshop in Lincoln hosts about 125 student journalists each summer offering students instruction in yearbook production, newspaper layout and design, photography, graphic design, newswriting and editorial leadership.

New Jersey

  • The Princeton University Summer Journalism Program is a 10-day all-expenses-paid summer journalism program students from underresourced financial backgrounds. All expenses, including travel costs to and from Princeton , will be
    paid for.

  • Point Park University is holding Summer High School Jounalism Workshops in Pittsburgh. Students can choose print, broadcast or photojournalism as their concentration. For more information contact Heather Star Fiedler.
  • Penn State's Institute for High School Journalists focuses on written and photographic journalism.

South Carolina

  • The Carolina Journalism Institute at the University of South Carolina in Columbia is an intensive five-day regional workshop devoted to helping junior high and high school students and advisers in enhancing their knowledge of editing, writing, designing and production techniques for all scholastic publications and productions.

Tennessee

  • The Tennessee High School Press Association holds its J-Camp at Lipscomb University.
  • Belmont University in Nashville offers a journalism camp for high school students interested in learning more about news writing, newspaper layout, online journalism, blogging, video journalism and more. Contact Bonnie Wagonfield for more information.

Texas

  • Gloria Shields All-American Publications Workshop will hold several classes for students and advisers on a variety of editorial and advertising subjects.
  • Metromedia Video Workshop, Lovejoy High School, Lucas, Texas. Learn Final Cut Pro and Premiere Elements. Several opportunities for location shoots.
  • The University of Texas at Austin hosts the ILPC Summer Workshop for students and advisers. Students with a variety of skill levels and interests will have a chance to attend specific sequences.

Virginia

  • The Virginia Association of Journalism Teachers and Advisers puts on its J-Camp at Virginia Tech for students.
  • Washington and Lee University offers its Summer Scholars program, which include a journalism curriculum, focusing on electronic journalism, print and media lab.

Washington

  • Seattle University and others will sponsor the Journalism Summer Workshop for high school students in June. All expenses are paid.
  • The Washington Journalism Education Association presents its Summer Journalism Workshop for newspaper, yearbook and broadcast students. It will include sessions in production, leadership, photojournalism, writing and more.

Wisconsin

  • The Kettle Moraine Press Association Summer Journalism Workshop at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gives publication staffs an advantage as they approach the challenge of covering their schools’ activities.
  • Marquette University in Milwaukee presents its Urban Journalism Workshop, developed to encourage high school students to pursue journalism careers.
