Healy has covered local and national higher education issues for The Boston Globe since 2000, and has also written a Sunday column, Campus Insider, since 2001.
From November 2001 to January 2002, Healy was on assignment in Afghanistan (Kabul, Kandahar and Tora Bora) covering the war, reconstruction, and regional politics for the Globe.
Before joining the Globe, he was political editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education, where he also worked as a political reporter for 4 years. He began his career reporting at daily newspapers in New Hampshire, including coverage of the University of New Hampshire and other colleges.
He graduated from Tufts University in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in English.
Healy’s series on grade inflation at Harvard University won a 2001 Livingston Award (for journalists under age 35) and the Education Writers Association Grand Prize for Distinguished Reporting.
